Port Elizabeth PORT ELIZABETH, JEFFREYS BAY Western Region
Port Elizabeth and Jeffreys Bay have an abundance of warm water beaches, an estuary and rivers. There are endless opportunities for surfing, angling, yachting, power-boating, boardsailing and scuba diving. Port Elizabeth offers malaria-free game reserves where you can view lions, elephants, black and white rhinos, buffalos, leopards, hippos, buck and 300 species of birds to start with. The Addo Elephant Park, a short drive away, is home to the largest family group of elephants so close to a city world-wide.
Grahams Town GRAHAMSTOWN Western Region
Grahamstown is filled with historical attractions such as the 1820 Settlers National Monument, 44 Air School, many Game Reserves. The annual Grahamstown National Arts Festival is a well supported and well-liked event with locals and visitors. During the festival artistic stalls, entertainment, concerts and theatre productions keep festival goers occupied. Grahamstown is a fascinating and historical destination that offers tourists the opportunity to discover the breathtaking beauty of the town and surrounding areas, as well as getting a glimpse into the turbulent past of the country.
CLARENS EAST LONDON Amatole Region
The shores are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and with its sub-tropical climate is a sought after tourist destination for local South Africans and international tourist alike. East London, itself, has some 400 000 residents, the metropolitan area has 1.4 million, and is the second largest city in the province of the Eastern Cape.
LADYBRAND PORT ST JOHNS, UMTHATHA Kei River Region
The wildness of the coast with its deep gorges and impenetrable forests, mangrove swamps and the primitive force of freak waves that caused many a shipwreck along this region of the coast, have not quite managed the attempt to tame them by colonial order, since Port St Johns inception in 1878. The setting of Port St Johns is possibly the most dramatic in the country and the drive from Umtata to Port St Johns is one of the best journeys on the Wild Coast.
ROSENDAL DORDRECHT, QUEENSTOWN Stormberg District
Queenstown itself lies at the foot of the Hangklip Mountain, whilst other towns in the district include Dordrecht, Molteno and Sterkstroom. The area not only provides incredible scenery, but it is a hive of activity for the outdoor enthusiast: there are trails, rivers, rocks, mountains, hiking, climbing, fishing, mountain biking, canoeing and anything really, as long as it involves relishing all that is al fresco.
ROSENDAL MACLEAR/UGIE, MOUNT FLETCHER Drakensberg Region
With attractive outdoor options like mountain biking, trout fishing, horse trails, rock art, fossil trails, large forestry plantations around Maclear, Ugie and Mount Fletcher, pretty churches, and the water sports paradise that is Lake !Gariep - so vast that it crosses the boundaries of the Free State, Eastern and Northern Cape and the Karoo Heartland and covers over 360 kilometres - it is not surprising that this formerly undiscovered region is receiving unprecedented attention.
ROSENDAL ALIWAL NORTH, MATATIELE Drakensberg District
Ukhahlamba, the Xhosa word meaning 'barrier of spears', refers to the majestic portion of the Drakensberg that dominates the northern section of the Eastern Cape, forming a border with the Free State. This region, through which winds the Orange River, is home to Lake !Gariep, Tiffindell - the only snow ski resort in the country, the hot springs of Aliwal North, and quaint Victorian towns like Lady Grey and the national monument town of Rhodes.
